End of an Era: Emirates Cuts 62% of Flights on Larger 615-Seat Airbus A380s

Ten airlines continue to have scheduled flights on the Airbus A380. Naturally, most carrier frames have very different capabilities and configurations. In fact, the rarest and most noticeable thing is Emirates’ second-class, non-first-class people, 615 people.

Big changes are coming to Emirates’ 615-seat A380s. As previously reported, the low-level, high-level configuration will be discontinued. 15 aircraft with that configuration will be upgraded with 569 seats that are still very high, and the addition of first economy. But before that, some changes are underway.

Due to the ongoing war in Iran, Emirates’ in general April’s schedule saw many big changes. This includes the entire A380 configuration, with 15 routes that do not see a superjumbo that month of the year. Compared to April 2025, the Gulf carrier’s schedule presentation at Cirium Diio shows that its total A380 fleet departs Dubai they fell in 43%.

Things are even worse for its 615 seats. Departures from the UAE hub of the passenger decreased from 394 last April (12 to 14 daily) to only 150 (five per day). That’s a huge reduction of 62% annualized. Until last week’s schedule update, 360 trips (12 daily) were planned. Flights to Copenhagen, Dusseldorf, Kuala Lumpur, London Gatwick, Pragueand Taipei have been removed.

A further reduction in the number of flights of this configuration is likely to reflect higher capacity during periods of low demand. Meanwhile, ch-aviation shows that two planes, A6-EOP and A6-EUX, have not flown since before the war started on February 28.

According to Flightradar24, Oscar Papa has been in Guangzhou since February 11, while Uniform X-Ray has been grounded in Dubai since February 22. Both planes are probably undergoing extensive maintenance or refurbishing at the new 569-seat airport.

As of March 31, and of course they may change, the world’s tallest double-decker quadjet is scheduled to use these five routes. They include Indonesia’s popular Bali/Denpasar hub, where Emirates’ superjumbos recently returned from a five-week non-war break.

Only two of the five roads will be fully occupied by 615 people in April. They include Birmingham, which has been served by Emirates since 2000. It is hard to imagine that more than a quarter of a century has passed since the first flight to the West Midlands region of the UK. The A380 first appeared in 2016; I visited to see it. Only non-first class superjumbos were used.

According to the UK Airports Authority, Emirates carried 607,026 passengers between Birmingham and Dubai last year. Divided fairly over the year, it was 1,663 passengers daily. About 60% of passengers connect in Dubai.

It was when the carrier had two daily flights: one on the A380 and the other on the 777-300ER. With 754,388 seats sold, its load was 80.5%. As always, this is only one measure of performance, and should not be taken alone.

Emirates Pulls Airbus A380 From 15 Major Routes: Here’s Why

The ongoing war in Iran has led to a significant reduction in Emirates’ A380 departures from Dubai, with plans subject to change soon.

In April 2025, Emirates flew 615 passengers on 15 routes. They were Dubai to Amsterdam (only three flights), Bali/Denpasar (daily), Bangkok (two daily), Birmingham (daily), Casablanca (only five flights), Copenhagen (daily), Düsseldorf (daily), Hong Kong (only one flight), Jeddah (only four flights), Kuala Lumpur (daily), Mauusdai (daily), Mauusdai (daily), London Pradegue (daily), and Taipei (daily).

As mentioned earlier, this arrangement operated 394 flights from Dubai last April. It was the largest number of flights for that month of the year on record.

Emirates has 15 A380s with 615 seats, out of its fleet of 116 superjumbos. Some 12% of them have that capacity. But by April 2025, they operated 17% of this type of aircraft. The gap is defined by the platform length of its highest equipment being 18% shorter than for its premium frames.
