Two accidents on the M5, ‘prolonged’, and other major roads closed
Bank holiday traffic has started to cause chaos on the M5 motorway as millions of people are expected to head to the South West.
The M5 southbound is currently closed between junctions 13 and 14, near Michaelwood Services following an accident this afternoon (Thursday 2 April).
The RAC said there are around 21m trips planned as holidaymakers depart over the four-day weekend.
The road and traffic monitoring site, Inrix, reported the accident at 1.57pm.
It said: “The M5 Southbound is partially blocked, blocking traffic due to an accident from J13 A419 (Stroud) to Michaelwood Services. Michaelwood Services is between J13 and J14.”
The extent of the injury is unknown at this time.
Emergency services have been contacted for further information.

A30 – RAWRIDGE – SECOND STATE – DEVON Traffic on the A30 in both directions at Viney Lane. In the area of road works.
KERNICK ROAD – PENRYN – BOTH DIRECTIONS – CORNWALL Kernick Road in both directions partially blocked, traffic slow due to accident, two vehicles involved from Jennings Road to A39.
Inrix reports that the Sedgemoor Services lorry pumps, between junctions 22 and 21, are out of fuel. It said:
M5 – SOMERSET – NORTHBOUND No fuel available at M5 Northbound Sedgemoor Services lorry pumps. It is between J22 and J21.
National Highways reported delays of 40 minutes on the southbound carriageway between the 13th and 14th lanes.
M5 – GLOUCESTERSHIRE – SOUTHBOUND Stop traffic on the M5 Southbound from J13 A419 ( Stroud ) towards Michaelwood Services. Congestion at J12 (Quedgeley / Hardwicke). There are long delays on the M4 due to an earlier accident between two vehicles from J19 to J20.

A380 KING’S ASH ROAD – PAIGNTON – SOUTHBOUND – DEVON Slow moving traffic A380 King’s Ash Road southbound between Fernicombe Road and A385 Totnes Road / A3022 Brixham Road (Tweenaway Cross). The journey time is 15 minutes.
A30 – EXETER – WESTBOUND – DEVON A30 Westbound Slight traffic congestion due to obstruction on the A377 (Alphington Junction, Exeter) towards Fingle Glen (Pathfinder Village).
A30 – RAWRIDGE – SECOND STATE – DEVON Queuing traffic A30 in both directions on Viney Lane. In the area of road works.
Two vehicles are believed to have crashed on the M5 southbound this afternoon (April 2).
One witness said that “a caravan and a car” had crashed.
