Designers Say These 9 Decor Options Will Never Go Out Of Style

6 minutes read

Most of us—whether we want to admit it or not—have fallen for the flash-in-the-pan trend that went out of style as soon as it entered the scene (looking at you, retro mushroom lights and Barbiecore pink). While no one wants their home to look dated, some decorating choices are timeless and will serve you well regardless of the calendar year—and you can work with classic pieces along the way.

Remember that it is much easier to move your house during the period if you start wisely: “It is better in the country. buildingsit’s easier to decorate—and it’s less tiring,” says Stephanie Sabbe, interior designer Nashville, Tennessee. “Colors and patterns change, but if the bones are good, a house can be decorated for decades.”

Once the foundation is laid, the fun part begins: creating things and creating a space for yourself. A well-planned space—one that respects the home’s style and reflects the homeowner’s personality—doesn’t go out of style, if you ask Adrianne Bugg, principal designer for Pillar & Peacock interior design in Florence, Alabama (which he co-founded with Brandeis Short).

Read on for timeless interior design pieces that will never go out of style, according to design experts.

Natural Stone Countertops

Stone rooms such as marble, quartzite and soapstone have a timeless appeal because they offer beauty and durability, he explains. Amanda Reynal, interior designer West Des Moines, Iowa and Palm Beach, Florida (and Lilly Pulitzer inspired bedroom design 2025 Kips Bay Decorator Show House Palm Beach). They also have many types. Since natural stones come in neutral tones, they combine beautifully with a variety of design styles, from ancient to modern, making them a valuable investment for any home.

“Each slab has a unique grain and texture; it brings depth and natural beauty to a space,” he says. “Natural stone ages beautifully, too, and develops more character over time.”

One exception: Granite, that is Leah Harmatzfounder of Field Theory Designer San Francisco and the developer of Hotel Lilien Tannersville, New York, tells us that it lacks the “interesting movement” that other natural stones provide.

Without a good combination of color and structure, the room can feel one-sided and, well, boring. To combat this, Kellie Sirna, owner and principal of Design Studio 11 Dallas, Texas, recommends incorporating “a mix of natural materials such as wood, stone and metal to create a balanced, structured feel.” She adds, “Then indulge yourself with soft fabrics and pops of color to add warmth and personality while keeping the space open, cohesive, and, best of all, welcoming.”

Complexity adds depth, texture, and complexity to a space by creating a different stylistic narrative. Also, this allows you to change the look of the room over time by changing or adding new things that you collect from your travels, find, or fall in love with throughout your life. Pillows, art, accessories, and books can all help you get involved.

“Keeping it classic with a little twist feels curated and personal,” says Bugg.

Fireplace (Feel Free to Fake!)

If you ask David Kaihoiinterior designer and owner Save Kaihoi New York City, “A home always feels more complete if it has a fireplace.

For an existing home, townhouse, condo, or apartment without a wood burning fireplace, Kaihoi says, “Go ahead and fake it! Nothing beats a real wood burning fireplace, but the convenience and maintenance of a gas unit is amazing.”

If you don’t have a chimney flue, go faux and install a fireplace that looks similar. Even the mere suggestion of fire is comforting, Kaihoi admits. The key is to “make it look architecturally convincing. Aim to get the true depth of the firebox and the appearance of the chimney breast.”

Nick Olsena interior designer New York City notes that the simple bolection fireplace mantel—“basically a simple, curved image that can be made of wood, stone, plaster or even mirror”—is also a classic. This is a wiser choice than an approach that is “excessive, historically inaccurate, or just plain obvious,” as Olsen believes many contemporaries do.

Your chairs, tables, bed frames, and couches don’t have to be new to feel new—in fact, a mix of old and new adds beauty and an unusual feel to your home. Well-made furniture from any era will stand the test of time, Harmatz says. He organizes his space, and clients’ homes, according to the quality of the pieces. Usually, everything needs to be done antiques and antiques feel refreshed and ready to enter the scene:

  • New upholstery
  • Oiling the wood
  • Sealing stones or ceramics
  • shiny metal

Bonus: “Many of these upgrades help preserve their antique charm,” Sirna explains.

Lacquered Brass Fittings

Speaking of irons, Olsen is forever swooning bare copper fittings—be it in bathroom fixtures, kitchen cabinet fittings, or door knobs and handles.

“The finish ages well and feels appropriate for the city, the country and the beach.” Changing out existing door hardware or bathroom fixtures is a lot more difficult than swapping in new cabinet knobs, but no matter where you add stainless steel, you’ll appreciate it every day,” he says.

In fact, Olsen took her advice to update her New York bathroom with copper fixtures, and tells us, “My dream is to install a matching copper shower curtain!”

Organized furniture design ensures that a space looks balanced, functional, cohesive and comfortable, explains Reynal.

He adds: “Thoughtful design prioritises flow, comfort and conversation, making a room feel inviting and easy to navigate. Whether in a well-designed living room or a common family space, the right placement of furniture enhances usability and allows design elements – such as colour, shape and pattern – to shine,” he adds.

If you find that you have a gap in your design, Olsen says you can’t go wrong with leather or suede seats with nice lines.

“Just look at the rooms David Hicks and Billy BaldwinOlsen says: “But to explain, the fine lines of Louis XV and Louis XVI furniture look fresh and beautiful in leather or suede, especially when compared to ‘mumsy’ silk. The French furniture makers knew what they were doing in the 18th century, these chairs can be very comfortable.”

Whether you incorporate them into a modern or traditional room, they’ll fit in well “as long as the scale and quality are solid,” Olsen admits. He adds that a quality offer is A-OK if you can’t find a solid one in ancient times translation. He wonders, “Who actually lives with museum-quality artifacts?”

Irregular shapes and forms create depth and dimension and suggest more thoughtfulness, all of which are associated with high design, he adds.

Slatted blinds feel ultra-industrial dark shadows may feel aggressive outside the bedroom or children’s room. But panels hung from the rod with rings feel clean and flexible, enhancing the overall design without overpowering it, according to Reynal.

She says that curtains hung on a rod with rings make a room “soft, tall and sophisticated. It works pretty well, from formal and traditional to breezy and casual, depending on the choice of fabric.
