Karl Lagerfeld’s First Estate Near Paris Can Be Yours for $3.1 Million

Far from the edgy and theatrical he was known for, Karl Lagerfeld’s first country location, located 50 kilometers outside of Paris, offers a calmer view of the image that is often associated with a tightly controlled personal style and the spectacle of high fashion. In contrast to his Paris apartment—which has been transformed into a mysterious, almost medical environment—this house reflects an informal way of living and working.

The main residence, dated 1749, was acquired by the German-born legend in 1986, and remained in his hands until 1998, during which time he was simultaneously in charge of Chanel and expanding his eponymous label. He used the property as a retreat from his busy schedule and as a creative background: several Chanel advertising campaigns were photographed in the gardens during his tenure, including shoots featuring iconic images of Inès de la Fressange and Tatiana Patitz.

Alexis Feyfant of Pyla Paris, who holds the $3.1 million listing, says: “It’s basically a space defined by scale, light, and a certain demeanor that feels very French.

The building follows the classic French style, with a symmetrical facade, tall windows, and rooms arranged in a row. Reception areas open to the courtyard, while smaller, private rooms sit beyond. According to Feyfant, the form of mirrors for everyday life, easily moves from the kitchen to dining areas and intimate spaces.

Built for a local family, the property later passed through several famous hands, including French actress Renée Saint-Cyr. Lagerfeld sold it in 1998 to Prince Ernst August of Hanover. Princess Caroline of Monaco and her family moved out many years later, living there from about 2004 to 2010. After their separation, the house sat empty for some time, roughly between 2010 and 2013, before changing hands again.

The current owner, who bought the property in 2014, has kept much of its original character, including floating Versailles-style parquet, ornate bottles, and stone-carved fireplaces that remain. The main house measures 5,400 square feet with seven bedrooms, while the separate guest house adds another 2,000 square feet, all sitting on 1.25 acres.

Its re-emergence follows the 2024 sale of Lagerfeld’s Paris apartment and studio on the Quai Voltaire, which sold for around $10.8 million at auction after a bidding war. Lagerfeld lived there from 2006 until his death in 2019 at the age of 85. Over the years, he cycled through the residences of the City of Light, Monaco, Rome, and beyond, an impressive feat that was later chronicled in the book.
