Smooth skin: Laura Geller Spackle Skin Perfecting Primer: Hydrate

This primer can help all future makeup look better and last longer. It is true that you are adding a step to your life, but the reward is visible.
When you start talking to experts about preparing for mature skin, the analogy of painting a house cannot be avoided. Just as you would avoid applying color directly to walls with “small cracks and crevices,” said makeup artist Stephen Sollitto, “it’s like your face.” A primer can seal everything with flexible, film-forming polymers that act as glue for whatever comes next.
Among the several primers our testers tried, Spackle Skin Perfecting Primer: Hydrate – from the most proud makeup artist Laura Geller – was the most moisturizing and popular, probably because of the jojoba seed oil and squalane. Makeup artist Nicky Posley noted: “Conserving water is key to keeping the canvas soft and ready for makeup.”
Light concealer: Dior Backstage Flash Perfector Concealer

This formula blends easily, conceals effectively, and reflects subtly. But it takes longer than you might think, so expect some trial and error as you get the dosage right.
Of the many products we tested for our guide to the best concealers, Dior Backstage Flash Perfector Concealer works best under the eyes, especially among reviewers over 40. For a concealer like this, it’s surprisingly thin – and a wee dab disperses a good amount of pigment, so fallout is minimal. Also, “there’s a good ending,” said makeup artist Rebecca Restrepo. The subtle look helps soften shadows and brighten you up — so much so, said one reviewer, that “a co-worker texted me during a video call to tell me my skin looked amazing.”
Fun base: Jones Road Seo Motheo

Packed with oils and emollients, this light-to-medium coverage foundation plumps skin while providing a dewy glow. But imperfection can sometimes still peek through, which is naturally good for some and disappointing for others.
When 51-year-old staff writer Rose Maura Lorre began to understand what was going on inside the Jones Road cosmetics brand, she ended up falling for What the Foundation. Another thin layer “added warmth, evenness, and radiance to my dull, dull skin,” she said. Created by veteran makeup artist Bobbi Brown, this glycerin- and essential oil-rich moisturizer has no full-on protection that can age Sephora in between for a lightweight look and feel.
While testing for this story, I pitted What the Foundation (aka WTF) against the silkiest choice from our guide to the best foundations – Dior Backstage Face & Body Foundation – and WTF won the 33-and-up set. (Yes, a 30-something entered the test mix for this. He considers the dry skin around his eyes “premature,” and he loved the emollience of this product.) On the other side of the age, a happy 87-year-old bubbe reports that WTF pierced above his sinuses and centcent. (And her 90-year-old husband wanted to note in the report that she “looked great.”)
A light moisturizer with SPF: Saie Slip Tint

This fragrant blend saves you time and effort by hitting the three essentials of daytime skin – moisture, conditioning, and some sun protection. However subtle, the fabric can look better on textured surfaces if you remove them slightly with a sponge.
If you’re not bothered by multiple layers – and, as the We Do Not Care Association for peri- and postmenopausal women has clearly shown, that’s a possibility – a tinted moisturizer is the easiest way to go. After testing several candidates, we tested five, and we liked the Saie Slip Tint. It contains “a modified form of hyaluronic acid that can swell and form a very thin film,” said cosmetic chemist Kelly Dobos. “That helps to retain moisture on the surface and replenish the skin, which helps prevent zinc oxide and pigment particles from entering fine lines.” However, two reviewers with very dry skin noted that they experienced minor breakouts when using this product with their fingers, but it was nothing that a soft, dry makeup sponge can’t remove quickly.
Another caveat: When used for full coverage, Slip Tint does not provide the same protection as regular sunscreen. So if your concerns include anything other than accidental UV exposure, this moisturizer shouldn’t be your only protection, according to dermatologists.
